Answers to common questions about therapy, supervision, fees, and getting started. If you have a question that isn’t covered here, you’re welcome to get in touch.

Getting Started

Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist?

You don’t need a referral to make an appointment. However, to access a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. This requires a separate GP appointment and can be arranged before or after you contact Veronica. You’re welcome to book without one in place.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. People seek support for many reasons, such as persistent stress, recurring patterns in relationships or work, significant life changes, a desire to better understand themselves, or a sense of being stuck. If something in your life feels difficult to navigate alone, it’s worth considering. You can read more in the article Is Therapy Right for You?

What happens in the first therapy session?

The first session is an opportunity to discuss what brought you to therapy, what you hope to gain from the process, and any questions you have. It’s also a chance to get a sense of whether this feels like the right fit before committing to further sessions. There’s no pressure to commit to ongoing appointments after an initial session.

Do you see clients in person?

Yes, from November 2026. Veronica sees clients and supervisees in person in Maroochydore, with parking on site. Sessions are also available by secure telehealth video through Microsoft Teams, so you can access support from anywhere in Australia.

Therapy

How many therapy sessions will I need?

This varies depending on what you’re working through and what you find most helpful. Some people find a small number of focused sessions sufficient for a specific concern. Others work over a longer period on more complex or longstanding patterns. There’s no fixed number, and it’s something to discuss openly from the outset.

What presentations do you work with?

Veronica works with adults and adolescents across a range of presentations, including anxiety and chronic stress, burnout, trauma and difficult life experiences, ADHD and neurodivergence, life transitions, emotional regulation difficulties, and relationship patterns. You can read more on the therapy page.

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Veronica draws on a range of evidence-based approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and trauma-informed approaches. Sessions are shaped by what’s most relevant to each person’s situation.

What’s the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor in Australia?

In Australia, psychologists are registered health practitioners regulated by AHPRA, requiring a minimum of six years of university-level training and supervised clinical practice. Counsellors aren’t subject to the same regulatory requirements. Only sessions with a registered psychologist or psychiatrist are eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Psychologist, psychiatrist or counsellor: what’s the difference compares training, regulation, cost and Medicare for each.

Fees and Medicare

Do you bulk bill?

No. The session fee is $230. Clients with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan may claim a Medicare rebate of $101.55, bringing the out-of-pocket cost to approximately $128 per rebated session. Full details are on the fees and funding page.

What’s a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan (often called a Mental Health Care Plan) is a document prepared by your GP that identifies your mental health needs and authorises Medicare rebates for eligible psychology sessions. It requires a dedicated GP appointment and doesn’t need a specialist referral. Once you have a plan, Medicare rebates are processed after each eligible session.

How many sessions can I claim on Medicare?

Under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, eligible clients can currently access up to 10 individual Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year. Your GP can advise on what applies to your specific situation.

Do you accept NDIS funding?

Yes. Veronica sees NDIS participants who self-manage or plan-manage their funding, where the plan includes funding for therapy supports. She isn’t a registered NDIS provider, so she can’t see participants whose plans are NDIA-managed. Sessions are charged in line with the current NDIS pricing schedule, with no gap fee. Please get in touch to talk through your situation before booking. There’s more detail on the psychology for NDIS participants page.

Supervision

Are you a Board-Approved Supervisor?

Yes. Veronica is registered with AHPRA as a Board-Approved Supervisor. Supervision sessions with Veronica can count toward the supervised practice hours required under the provisional psychologist pathway and other AHPRA-endorsed programs.

Who can access supervision with you?

Supervision is available for provisional psychologists, registrars, fully registered psychologists, and allied health professionals, including social workers, occupational therapists, and counsellors. Sessions are available in person in Maroochydore from November 2026, and via telehealth for clinicians across Australia.

Does supervision count toward my AHPRA hours?

Supervision provided by a Board-Approved Supervisor can count toward the supervised practice hours required for the provisional psychologist pathway. If you’re working toward a specific registration pathway, confirm your exact requirements with AHPRA directly, as requirements vary by program.

How much does supervision cost?

Supervision fees are separate from therapy fees. Please get in touch for current supervision rates and availability.
